The STEP label is awarded to handmade carpets that are produced according to fair trade standards, including ensuring fair conditions of production; paying fair prices to ensure fair wages; fighting abusive child labour; promoting ecologically viable production methods; and authorising independent verification.
The label is not applied to individual products but to import/export companies. All handmade carpets offered by STEP licensees are subject to fair trade regulations.
